Skincare Tips for Fall

If you’re anything like me, you suffer from dry, dull skin during the fall and winter months. Lip balm, lotion and plenty of scarves are a great way to prepare for the cooler months; but there are many simple skin treatments that you may want to consider to keep that moist summer glow far into the holiday season.

Many people assume that it isn’t necessary to protect their skin from the sun during fall and winter. This simply isn’t true! Regardless of the temperature or season, the sun emits powerful ultraviolet rays, which can harm our skin and lead to premature wrinkles and skin cancer. Your best defense against the harmful effects of the sun is to wear sunscreen year-round. You might want to try a tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 15, or even better, 30.

It’s essential to keep your skin moisturized to avoid the itchy, dry skin that often comes with wind and cold. Keep in mind that you should use a different lotion for your face than for your body. Your face is more delicate, and typically produces more natural oils than your hands or body. Body lotion is often thicker than face moisturizer. It’s formulated to tackle difficult dry spots like your hands, knees and elbows. Facial moisturizer, however, is lighter and often formulated to be “non-comedogenic,” which means that it won’t clog your pores. It may also be helpful to use a moisturizing body wash that doesn’t remove the natural oils from your skin. If you have sensitive skin, try a non-fragranced formula like unscented Everyday Shea, available at Whole Foods.

During summer, many women refrain from using heavy amounts of foundation and make-up; opting for lighter, more natural looks. During the winter, however, we tend to pile on the foundation, blush and bronzer trying to simulate that summer glow (although, pale skin is IN! And no matter what skin tone you are, you should embrace it, you’re beautiful!) Not to mention, smoky eyes and red lips. If you tend to wear more make-up during the fall and winter, you should consider switching to a more powerful cleanser. This will ensure that you are cleaning your face well and removing all the make-up, dirt and oil that may be clogging your pores.

If you suffer from acne, fine wrinkles, sun spots or dull skin; you may want to try microdermabrasion at home. Microdermabrasion is a popular skincare treatment which gently removes the outermost layer of your skin while increasing cell regeneration; this process rejuvenates your skin leaving it bright and glowing. Microdermabrasion can greatly reduce the appearance of fine lines, sun damage and decrease the size of your pores. You can have microdermabrasion done at spas or the dermatologist, but these treatments can be very expensive. With at-home microdermabrasion products, you can get your skin looking flawless for a fraction of the cost. Affordable microdermabrasion kits and products are available at some drugstores, spas or online retailers like ShopNBC.com.

Finally, one of the simplest ways to keep your skin hydrated during the colder months is by drinking plenty of water. Even though you’re probably not as hot, sweaty and desperately thirsty as you are during the summer, staying hydrated is still essential for bright, glowing skin. Plus, drinking plenty of water is just plain good for you.

No matter what time of the year, it’s always important to take care of your skin. By protecting yourself from harmful UV rays, keeping your skin moisturized and properly cleansed, using microdermabrasion treatments and simply drinking plenty of water, your skin will stay bright and beautiful against the harsh wind and cold of fall and winter.
